Midsummer Place Mall

Milton Keynes (United Kingdom)
The initial design of MIDSUMMER PLACE SHOPPING CENTRE in Milton Keynes was the work of the architects DEREK WALKER, STUART MOSSCROP and CHRISTOPHER WOODWARK. The inspiration behind the design was the ideas of the renowned German architect LUDWING MIES VAN DER ROHE, considered one of the fathers of modernist architecture. At the outset the intention was to build the biggest shopping centre in the worldwith open areas and easy access to be built outwards rather than upwards. GMW Architects of London undertook the design of work to enlarge the Centre and this was carried out at the beginning of the XXI century. This resulted in the Centre becoming effectively the largest in the world and being includedin the Guinness Book of Records. Its minimalist design combined with public spaces, in line with the features of modernist architecture, made English Heritage apply to the Culture Ministry for it to be classifiedas a Grade ll listed building in 2008 and this was granted in 2010. BEIGE CENIA STONE with a honed finish provided the perfect tone and texture that the designers wanted to create the modernist style centre.
