Very high temperatures are applied to blocks of stone that have been serrated; the resulting thermal shock causes mineral particles to come to the surface and small fragments to break off. Without altering its original colour the rock is now protected from both the elements and contaminants in the atmosphere and has acquired a slightly rough surface.
